What does it mean to be a Welcoming Congregation?
A Welcoming Congregation aims to encourage the participation of GLBT people in all manner of church activities, being sensitive to their particular concerns and inclusive in our language. It incorporates the experiences of GLBT people into the life of the church and offers outreach, support and opportunities for dialogue with heterosexuals to further understanding and mutual growth. In addition, a Welcoming Congregation speaks up for its GLBT community and participates in social justice projects designed to promote freedom, justice and equality.
To support the aims of a Welcoming Congregation, UUCF created a GLBT Committee. Read the GLBT Committee's Statement of Purpose here.
Why does it only refer to GLBT people?
Because GLBT people have traditionally suffered severe discrimination at the hands of religious and spiritual groups. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) also has an initiative to address all forms of oppression called The Journey Toward Wholeness.
Are there other Welcoming Congregations?
There are 542 Unitarian Universalist Welcoming Congregations in the United States and Canada. Learn more here.
