Welcoming Congregation Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to be a Welcoming Congregation?
A Welcoming Congregation aims to encourage the participation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in all manner of congregational activities, being sensitive to their particular concerns and inclusive in our language. It incorporates the experiences of LGBT people into the life of the congregation and offers outreach, support, and opportunities for dialogue with heterosexuals to further understanding and mutual growth. In addition, a Welcoming Congregation speaks up for its LGBT community and participates in social justice projects designed to promote freedom, justice and equality. To support the aims of a Welcoming Congregation, UUCF created Equality UUCF. Read Equality UUCF's Statement of Purpose.
Why does it only refer to LGBT people?
Because LGBT people have traditionally suffered severe discrimination at the hands of religious and spiritual groups.
Are there other Welcoming Congregations?
There are 542 Unitarian Universalist Welcoming Congregations in the United States and Canada. Learn more here.
